New Zealand’s first National Climate Change Risk Assessment (NCCRA) aimed to identify the most significant risks we face from climate change across all domains that underpin well-being in New Zealand including – society, the natural environment, the economy, the built environment and governance.
Tonkin + Taylor led the engagement process for the NCCRA, and the risk assessment for the built environment domain, whilst having oversight of the overall risk assessment process and application.
The NCCRA approach incorporated engagement with stakeholders and with iwi/Māori as Treaty partners, to combine scientific, technical, and expert information with local knowledge and experience.
This first NCCRA is based on Arotakenga Huringa Āhuarangi: A Framework for the National Climate Change Risk Assessment for Aotearoa New Zealand, which was developed by an expert panel (including Tonkin + Taylor) for the purpose of this and future assessments.
Through undertaking the risk assessment process, we identified learnings associated with the application of the framework methodology that can be taken forward to help inform the next NCCRA.
